Supervision Philosophy
I truly value relationships. The importance of being empathetic and non-judgmental in clinical practice allows for clients to feel comfortable in engaging in the therapeutic relationship, which is the foundation and of the utmost importance in facilitating change.
Just as a strong therapeutic alliance is paramount in our work with clients, a strong supervisory relationship is foundational in clinical supervision. Collaboration is key in supervision, we must work together to identify your strengths, areas for growth, and the best way for you to receive feedback throughout supervision.
You must be open and willing to be uncomfortable to learn and grow as a counselor.
Approach to Supervision
With the relationship as our foundation, I will challenge you to be reflective and to think critically, while simultaneously providing support through the supervision process. I am direct and straightforward, which I balance with empathy and intentionality.
I often pose questions and offer thought provoking reflections to guide you to develop the skills necessary to provide valuable counseling services to clients, enhance your case conceptualization and clinical decision-making skills, and increase your self-awareness. Self-awareness is vital to our work as counselors, and in supervision I value your growth and will guide you towards personal insights and increase your emotional awareness that will enhance your professional work with clients.
Intentionality in Supervision
I am intentional in my approach to clinical supervision which is individually tailored to your stage of development. I adhere to the Developmental Model of counselor growth, using a collaborative approach to work with you to identify goals and enhance your clinical skills to grow both personally and professionally.
Additionally, I utilize the Discrimination Model performing the roles of teacher, counselor, and/or consultant depending on the needs of you as a supervisee.
As a teacher, I will provide information (e.g., psychoeducation) and real time examples (e.g., modeling, role plays) that will be instrumental to improve your knowledge base to work with clients.
In the counselor role, I will empathetically support you through challenges arising from your clinical work.
As a consultant, I often use Socratic questioning to guide you to think critically about yourself, your clients, and your clinical work.
As your clinical supervisor, you are at the center of how I approach our work together.
Supervision Expectations
As a supervisee, I expect you to be invested in your personal and professional growth. I work best with supervisees who are prepared for our supervision time together, asks questions, seeks guidance, and see themselves as a lifelong student of the counseling profession.
As a supervisee, it is expected you will be timely and proficient in your documentation (e.g., case notes, treatment planning). Additionally, I expect you to make mistakes, we are all learning and growing. Becoming aware of our areas for growth is necessary to continue to improve on our journey as an aspiring counselor. In clinical supervision you can expect I will be intentional in my preparation for our meetings and in tune with your developmental stage as a counselor.
I will take the time to get to know you as a person and how our identities may influence the supervisory relationship. I will push you out of your comfort zone, to think, to learn, and to grow, not only as a counselor, but also in your personal journey through life.
